The source of the problem, or should say "catalyst" since it's really a bug, is having installed apps under one OS, updating to a new OS, and then trying to update said apps.
There are a couple of work-arounds but here's the easiest:
- Attempt to download the update. After the download fails, the updated app icon will be sitting there not fully installed, and the icon for the previous version of the app will still be sitting there as well.
- Delete the icon for the original version of the app (by holding down an app icon for a second or two until they wiggle, pressing 'x' to delete on the app you want to delete, then pressing 'Home' to return out of "wiggly" mode.)
- Now touch the icon for the new version of the app. It will install and all will be well.
