Bluetooth Development Blocked on iPhone

Inside sources tell me that Apple currently blocks access in the SDK to any interesting Bluetooth functionality. Therefore developers will not be able to do anything interesting, and we do not have anything interesting from Apple for the time being.

An earlier post of mine wondered whether the lack of Bluetooth functionality was due to Apple blocking or third-party developers simply not getting around to it yet. Now we know.

Any further news on this topic? I just got an iphone and would love to develop some cool bluetooth gadgets to go along with it (remote sensors, home automation, etc.).

Sorry Tim. Just checked out my usual haunts, including iPhone SDK doc's and found nothing new.

You may have seen some of the ones out there:

Savant home automation for iPhone.

Crestron interface from enGadget

Looks like you need an expensive system behind them though.

You might consider communicating http from iPhone to a local wireless server and then through to your other bluetooth devices via a bluetooth access point like those from Bluegiga and Sena

D-Link is supposed to have one too but they scare me.

Thanks for the post. Your app sounds cool. Let me know when you're done. I might buy it myself!

peace,
