Having used 3G on the blackjack on the outer edge of the 3G network up here in Suwanee it's definitely eats up the battery life.
I'm very surprised that with the new 3G chip that Apple had built for the iPhone that it still eats up the battery life.
I also remember, that the battery life is lessened because of switching back and forth between edge and 3G when it cannot find a 3G network. So all that looking for a 3G network takes it's toll.
On the blackjack I actually had a shortcut that turned the 3G off and on and only used the 3G when I needed it or forgot to turn it off.

Had the same problem....turned off and on and picked up the signal again....
